There´s hope after a stroke. With stem cells Tomas had a second chance.

Tomas is 82 years and lives close to the Mexican border, in the US.

He likes to describe himself as a normal guy who likes to share time with family and friends with the companion of a good meal.

He lives a calm life that retired people like to live.

His life was normal, but suddenly he felt a strange headache and his vision became blurry, also he lost strength in his legs, he didn’t know what was going on.

He suffered a stroke.

A stroke is characterized by an obstruction on the blood flow that reaches the brain usually caused by a thrombus (1), when the blood flow stops reaching the brain, the brain stop working normally as it starves from oxygen and nutrients that it needs.

Depending on the location and severity of the thrombus, the consequences could vary from brain damage to a disability or even death.

Luckily to Tomas, he was not alone.

Tomas has a second chance

His family was alarmed so they took Tomas to the hospital.

Tomas was fortunate, the doctors quickly realized that Tomas was having a stroke and started the emergency treatment.

The quick intervention prevented fatal consequences from the stroke, Tomas was stabilized and his family was relieved.

Tomas went into observation, all they could do is wait, their family prayed, hoping there are no consequences from the stroke.

The days passed and Tomas’s condition was steady, his body was recovering but something called everyone’s attention.

Tomas’ legs felt weak, he couldn’t move his legs, he could not walk by itself, doctors said that the stroke possibly caused damage in the brain regions involved with strength and movement in his legs.

They couldn’t say if Tomas would be able to walk again, sometimes the condition is permanent.

His family was in shock, there were many questions in their head about whether his life would change forever.

Tomas’ son was aware of the situation and started looking for an option.

Worried, he researched stroke recovery and remembered that he heard about stem cells treatment in the past, he thought that maybe it could help his dad as they helped Gordie Howe.

He didn’t even hesitate, he loved his dad and, if maybe stem cells could help, they should get him treatment right away before giving up and resigning to the condition his father was experiencing.

Without knowing if he made the right decision, he quickly booked treatment at Novastem and hoped for a good outcome, as the stem cell intervention increases the likelihood of a successful result if the intervention is made within 36-72 hours after the stroke.

After some dialogue with his son, Tomas contacted Novastem, hoping there was something that could be done.

He was afraid that maybe he would never be able to walk again, but he thought that “when God shuts a door, He always opens another one”, so he should at least try.

This is where Tomas’ life changed again, this time for good.

Tomas visited Novastem, and was surprised when he walked inside the clinic, “The staff was supportive at every moment, they carried me when it was needed. Everything was clean, all the staff was extremely professional. Mrs. Paola Hawk answered all my questions” he mentioned later.

The first stage of stem cell treatment at Novastem was clinical tests to evaluate Tomas’ condition.

These tests were conducted to prevent adverse reactions and to determine if he was a candidate for stem cell treatment.

After careful deliberation, they determined he was a good candidate and the likelihood of positive results with stem cells was high, so the treatment started.

The first stage of Tomas’s treatment was an intravenous injection with stem cells, little improvement was observed, however Tomas didn’t show adverse reactions so the treatment continued.

A week later Tomas received a stem cell injection directly in his spinal cord and after a couple of days after this the second injection, events took an unexpected turn.

I was able to walk again, an incomparable sensation. Like coming back to life.

A couple of days after, Tomas’ legs felt different, he regained strength on both legs and could move them around without trouble.

He tried to walk and found that he could do it slowly, a task that wasn’t even an option before the stem cell treatment.

The sensation was unique, his wife cried and said “ I was afraid that Tomas wouldn’t walk again”.

Tomas got a second chance.

“Good things happen when your family supports you” Tomas said. (Watch the full testimonial here).

Days passed and Tomas kept doing the rehabilitation exercises that Dr.Vanessa recommended and also continued the stem cell treatment.

With some patience and persistence, Tomas was able to walk as he had before the stroke, treatment was considered a success.

Stem cells helped Tomas’s body to heal the injuries caused by the stroke.

Our staff was happy to see Tomas walk out of the clinic with a big smile and completely unassisted.

The first time he came in he was in a wheelchair, now he was walking.

Stem cells can help with stroke sequels.

Conventional medical treatments are usually limited to help people recover from the consequences.

There aren’t many options that help a patient’s brain cells regenerate brain tissue and regain functions except for stem cells.

Under certain conditions stem cell interventions have a high success rate, one important factor is the haste of that intervention.

I recommend patients try stem cells in the early stages of a stroke as this increases the likelihood of success.

I’m sure you have many questions.
