The elbow is the joint that connects the upper arm to the forearm. The elbow joint is made up of bone, cartilage, ligaments and fluid. Muscles and tendons help the elbow move around its joint. When any of these structures are injured or diseased, elbow problems occur.
Common Treatments for Elbow Pain
Treatment for elbow pain depends, like every disease, on the cause of the pain. Acute pain caused by improper loading usually goes away on its own.
If tennis elbow or spondylitis is injured, a bandage may be needed to immobilize the joint. However, elbow pain is often treated with oral or topical medications. Your doctor may also inject corticosteroids or a local anesthetic to relieve pain.
A proper rehabilitation plan is sometimes sufficient, but persistent triggers must be corrected, otherwise the pathology may return.
When conservative treatment is not effective, surgery may be necessary. Currently, most elbow diseases can be treated arthroscopically with less invasive methods.
If the patient has osteoporosis, an osteotomy can be performed. If the injury is very severe or the joint is badly damaged, an elbow prosthesis can also be implanted.
